Officials say that around 40 people feared dead after a series of blasts rocked a Russian arms depot have been found safe and well.

Two firefighters were killed when the massive explosions ripped through the weapons plant.

Russia’s Defence Ministry says the fire broke out while soldiers were attempting to decommission munitions at a facility near to the city of Ulyanovsk on the banks of the River Volga in central Russia.

About 3,000 people were evacuated from the area surrounding the plant, with reports that the windows of many houses close by were blown out.
