President Barack Obama has joined thousands of fellow Americans in a memorial service for the 13 people who died in a shooting rampage at an army base in Texas last week. Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a US army psychiatrist and a Muslim, is suspected of the killings.
President Barack Obama said the deaths were a tragedy. He said: “No faith justifies these murderous and criminal acts; no just and loving God looks upon them with favour. And for what is done, we know that the killer will be met with justice, in this world and in the next.” Twenty-nine others were injured in the massacre which has stunned the nation. Hasan was in turn shot by police and remains in hospital. An investigation is under way into his motives and any possible ties to extremist Islamic ideology. With record US combat deaths abroad, the incident has further weakened public support for the mission in Afghanistan – a decision on Obama’s war strategy review is still awaited.
