German film Liebe Mauer – Dear Wall – is a romantic comedy set just before the Fall of the Wall. When Franzi (Felicitas Woll) goes shopping in East Berlin and meets Sascha (Maxim Mehmet) the East German boarder guard, not even the wall can keep them apart.
Says Felicitas Woll, “Franzi approaches life head on, is looking for adventures. She stands on her own two feet. She’s very courageous and spontaneous, two characteristics I find awesome.” Says director Peter Timm, “For the role of Franzi I was looking for a very likeable woman, someone who wasn’t cramped or spiritual. I wanted someone fresh, lively, with her heart in the right place. Someone who says what she thinks, and has no fear of authority.” But there’s more than a Wall between the lovers – they also have to contend with the Stasi – the State Security Police spying on them because they think Franzi is a spy and that Sascha is conspiring with her. Of course the end of the film is a foregone conclusion. After all, it IS a romantic comedy set just before the fall of the wall. The film will be released in Germany on 19th November.
