Hilary Swank, with two Oscars already under her belt, is back in Mira Nair’s new film “Amelia”, a biopic on the life and times of famous female flyer Amelia Earhart.
After breaking records and fighting for the rights of female pilots, Earhart disappeared over the pacific Ocean in 1937 during her second attempt to fly round the world. The film co-stars Ewan McGregor as Gene Vidal, and Richard Gere as George Putnam, Amelia Earhart’s husband and publicist. The film is leisurely and lavishly shot, a treat for scenery lovers but possibly less enticing for non-stop action fans. Critics have been harsh, complaining that the script is dull and the whole film is drizzled with enough honey to drown even Pooh Bear. Cinema-goers have been kinder however; for those unfamiliar with Earhart’s story, there’s plenty of interest here and of course, the scenery is stunning.
