Andorran bridge collapse kills five

Five workers are now known to have died in the collapse of a road bridge being built in Andorra.

The construction site is to remain closed until an investigation has discovered why a twenty metre long section fell as workers poured new concrete at the site. Checks are also being out on work done by the same construction company between the bridge and a nearby tunnel. The head of the Andorran government, Jaume Bartumeu, said: “The government has just decided to halt the work and we’ve informed the company of that. Now, we’ve told the company to check on the safety of work carried out between the bridge and the tunnel. “ The authorities say around 60 people were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse. As well as the five dead, who were all Portuguese, half a dozen workers were hurt; they suffered head and limb injuries. According to media reports there have been two previous fatal accidents at the site, one earlier this year and another two years ago which led to two deaths.
