Russian police make arrests at Moscow human rights protest

Russian police have made 50 arrests during an illegal human rights protest in central Moscow.

Police dragged off almost half of the hundred or so present. Human rights groups claim the Kremlin has muzzled media since Vladimir Putin came to office in 2000 and that the situation remains the same under President Dimitry Medvedev. Protestor Lyudmila Alexeeva said: “The idea to organise the demonstrations on the 31st of the month here in the capital is an attempt to make a tradition of peaceful gatherings to allow citizens the chance to defend the Russian constitution.”
