Six police officers and a passer-by have been wounded in a gun attack on a police station in Athens. One of the officers is in serious condition.
Police say two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire as they rode past the station in the north of the Greek capital. It’s not known who carried out the attack. The president of the Police Officers Union, Yannis Makris said, “These police officers, they are in their twenties and just here to make a living. And these perpetrators think they are terrorists but they are murderers. This act is beyond any logic.” The Greek Civil Protection Ministry said its response will be immediate and resolute. It has made combating guerilla groups a top priority. Leftist and anarchist groups in Greece have mounted a series of attacks against police, businesses, public institutions and politicians since a policeman shot dead a teenager in Athens in December. That incident sparked the country’s worst riots in decades.
