As negotiations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency stutter on, tit for tat accusations between Tehran and the West become ever more intense. During his speech to the Inter Parliamentary Union in Geneva, the president of the Iranian parliament Ali Larijani accused Washington of state terrorism. In an exclusive interview with Euronews correspondent Mohamed Abdel Azim, Larijani asserts his country’s right to nuclear technology.
With support from Moscow and Beijing, Tehran is playing a game of diplomatic chess with the West against a backdrop of internal division within the six-nation contact group of World powers.

———————————- Euronews : We have the impression that the world is divided concerning the Iranian nuclear issue. Ali Larijani : We are working under the supervision of the IAEA. What else should we do ? What some countries like the USA tell us, is that we can’t have access even to peaceful nuclear technology. Therefore they magnify the issue of Iranian nuclear weapons to deprive us of peaceful nuclear technology. Euronews : Obama is trying to change policy towards Iran, from the Axis of Evil (of the Bush administration) to the dialogue of Obama with Iran. How do you see the future? Ali Larijani : Yes Mr.Obama said “We are going to extend our hand to Iran”. But because of terrorist acts that took place in Iran, now that hand is bloody. Euronews : They are saying, in Western countries that Iran is two short steps from building the atomic bomb. Ali Larijani : What are you saying we are so close to? You mean today we are moving in the direction of developing nuclear weapons? This is a lie. Even reports released by the American Intellegence Services show we are not moving in that direction. But this we don’t hide: we have nuclear know-how. Iran is a country that is run according to religious beliefs and values. The leader, the supreme leader of Iran has released a Fatwa, a religious decree, that having access to weapons of Mass Destruction is forbidden. Not just nuclear weapons but chemical and biological ones. Let me ask you a question… Do the Americans have nuclear weapons or not? Euronews : Yes, they do have.. Ali Larijani : What about Israel? Euronews : No one can say if Israel has nuclear weapons. That is all the ambiguity of Israeli nuclear doctrine. Do you think that Israel is going to clean your nuclear installations by attacks ? Ali Larijani : Let’s not take that seriously. My question is: Does France have nuclear weapons ? What about the UK? Shouldn’t we be afraid of this? Why aren’t these countries stopped? Why isn’t the world community afraid of this ? When it comes to Iran they say that maybe in the future Iran will develop nuclear weapons. You know… Do you have a magic mirror that tells you that Iran is going to do something like this? How can you punish somebody based on the possible intentions that he might have in his mind? Euronews : But you are testing Missiles. We are talking about Russian Missiles. Could you confirm that you have Russian S-300 Missiles on your soil ? Ali Larijani : Of course there is no doubt that we will equip ourselves, you know, in order to have military strength. But this is not something secret. We announce this. We build, we develop missiles as a force for deterence. If they threaten us then we will have to produce more. Israel is making threats. We have to be prepared. We have to defend ourselves. But we are not threatening anybody. Euronews : Listening to you, you are referring to terrorism. In Iran, explosions happened few days ago. Iranians are accusing some foreign countries. Could you specify which are those contries ? Ali Larijani : One of the current leaders of the terrorist group behind those explosions in Iran says publicly that that they have contacts and meetings with people from the USA. Unfortunately both in Iraq and Afghanistan sometimes, the USA has dealings with them. Euronews : You are accusing clearly United States ? Ali Larijani : Yes, I have heard that they have denied this. I do not think that they have done the right thing. Euronews : But Washington accuses you of supporting insurgents and terrorism groups in Irak. Ali Larijani : Do they have any evidence to offer? Americans know full well where the terrorists in Iraq come from. They come mostly from countries that are friendly with the USA. But, we know, we have information that Mr Khalil Zadeh, the US Ambassador to Iraq, had negociations and meeting with terrorists. Euronews : You mentioned Hizbollah and Hamas. Are the actions of both groups legal? Ali Larijani : Of course, those two groups are different from other groups. This is actually the activity and doing of Western-backed medias. They want to confuse Hizbollah and Hamas with terrorism. This is a big lie. Euronews : In Western countries many people regret that Iran supports Hizbollah and Hamas. Ali Larijani : We are proud of supporting them. We have never hidden our support. We defend Hizbollah and Hamas. We are not like some countries that do something but mean something else. Israel continues with its settlements. It is bombarding and attacking Palestinians. Gaza is still under blockade. One and a half million people don’t have access to health services and food. Now we are nearing winter. People don’t have buildings to live in. Is this a defence of the Human Rights that the Americans proclaim and hold so many conferences about? Euronews : But, Sherin Ebadi asks the USA to intervene to protect reformists. Do you have any word to say about Human Rights violations in Iran ? Ali Larijani : Of course, issues related to Human Rights are very valid ones and need to concern the world. And we welcome this. Seriously, countries should deal with this. What has been done in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, these are not things that anyone can ignore. Any country in which there are Human Rights violations needs to be investigated. But, please, this is my request to you, people of the Media: Human Rights should not be used and exploited to create political pressure, in order to pressurise other countries… Euronews : Thank you very much…
