Pakistan pushes on with Taliban offensive

Day five of Pakistan’s offensive against Taliban bases in southern Waziristan.

Pakistan military have been clearing out caves and finding arms caches abandoned by militants. Army commanders have called on NATO troops in Afghanistan to seal the nearby frontier to prevent cross-border movement and flow of weapons. Back in Islamabad gunmen fired on an army vehicle and killed two soldiers. While most of Pakistan’s media and public back the offensive, an order to shut schools after a suicide attack on Islamabad university has triggered some alarm. About 200 students demonstrated in Karachi accusing the government of fighting a US war and blaming them for triggering what they called the retaliatory attacks from the militants. Schools across Pakistan are expected to remain closed until next week, but parents are demanding that more convincing steps be taken to protect their children.
