The US is on a mission to Warsaw to try to calm tension over the u-turn on a missile defence shield in Europe.
Vice President Joe Biden has begun a visit that will take him to Poland and the Czech Republic, which were both partners in the plan that’s been scrapped. The US u-turn was welcomed by Moscow, but viewed with dismay by some countries in eastern Europe. Biden is quoted as saying the US has no agreement with Russia at central Europe’s expense, and it will not sign any such agreement. The US has now opted for a system of interceptors that can target short and medium range missiles, and Poland and the Czech Republic could still be involved in that.
