The Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has died suddenly while on holiday in Spain.
The 33-year-old Irish pop star reportedly passed away in his sleep last night after having a few drinks out in Mallorca. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances. Gately’s coming out a decade ago as a member of a group whose main audience was young teenage girls caused a huge sensation in the pop world. The five-member band, put together by pop impresario Louis Walsh, who also assembled Girls Aloud and Westlife, was most popular in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Britain. Boyzone had six number one hits on the UK pop charts between 1994 and 2000, including “Stay” in 2001. Other members of the band are said to be on their way to Spain.
