The jury at the San Sebastian film festival has awarded Chinese director Lu Chuan the “Golden Shell” prize for his movie “City of Life and Death.”
The film portrays the shock and horror of the atrocities committed during the Chinese-Japanese war. That conflict began when Japan invaded China in 1937. Lu Chuan said that outside China nobody really knows about this tragedy. His black and white film “City of Life and Death” also won the best photography award. The Silver Shell award for best male and female performances went to Pablo Pineda and Lola Duenas for their roles in “Yo Tambien”, or “ Me Too.” In real life and in his role in the film Pineda has Downs Syndrome. During the closing Gala ceremony the two actors expressed their thanks to the directors of the movie, Antonio Naharro and Alvaro Pastor. The film centers on an impossible love affair between Pineda and Duenas, work colleagues in an office. In the movie as in real life he has earned a university degree.
