With two days to go before Germany’s election, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s campaign team are handing out free food in an attempt to wet the appetites of potential voters.
However all the polls indicate Merkel may have it in the bag and is unlikely to suffer the late slide in support that she suffered in 2005. The Social Democrat party of Frank Walter Steinmeier currently lags some 10 points behind the CDU, putting Merkel’s conservatives on course for their long dreamed of centre-right coalition. Latest polls put the CDU on 35 percent with the SPD attracting around a quarter of potential voters. Elsewhere, the business friendly FDP and the CDU“s possible partners lie on 13 percent.
