Merkel mobilises the young for victory

Germany’s election is only days away and the young members of Chancellor Angela’s Merkel’s CDU party are working round the clock to drum up support.

Even though Merkel has a commanding poll lead, nothing is being left to chance. Max Odefey from Merkel’s Team Deutschland said: ‘‘The main thing we coordinate here is the telephone campaign, which in Germany is limited to party members, you call up and try to mobilise them. Not everyone is stuck in the office however, many of Merkel’s young campaign team are out on the streets bringing a little spark to strike up support. Merkel’s Christian Democrat party has a double digit lead over the nearest rival and this time they want to make it count having twice been denied a centre-right coalition in the last two elections in 2002 and 2005. Despite pulling out all the stops to assure maximum victory, not everything has gone to plan. A number of the Chancellor’s rallies have been dogged by flashmobs who accuse her of a dull campaign. Organised over the internet the aim is to heckle by repeating the same word – in Hamburg it was: “Yes.”
