Six Italians troops among 16 killed in Kabul blast

Six Italian soldiers and at least 10 Afghan civilians have been killed in a suicide car bombing in Kabul. The Taliban says it was behind the explosion. The Italian NATO troops, from the Parachute Regiment, were returning from the airport when their convoy was targeted. Four soldiers were injured as were dozens of civilians caught up in the blast.

It happened near the diplomatic enclave in the city centre – a district that houses the US and British embassies and other missions. Several buildings were severely damaged by the blast. This is the latest incident in a dramatic escalation of violence this year in a Taliban-led insurgency against Afghan and foreign security forces. Insurgent attacks are at their highest level since the Taliban was ousted from power in late 2001.
