Culture vultures are swooping on the French city of Lyon for what is being described as “one of the most significant contemporary art festivals of our time.” From now until January 2010, the emphasis will be on everyday life as art. In other words, making the ordinary… extraordinary.Artists from across the world are doing just that at the 10th Biennale de Lyon, all under the watchful eye of its Chinese-born curator. In Hou Hanru’s view, everyday life is very often forgotten about, despite being an area from which many artists have drawn inspiration. Guaranteed to raise an eyebrow or two, creativity featuring buckets, brooms and upturned trucks is a million miles from the Mona Lisa. But for those who like their art to be modern, the hugely-varied spectacle is bound to broaden your horizons and shake up your senses.
