First-time filmmakers enjoyed a successful evening as the awards were handed out at the Venice Film Festival. Israel’s Samuel Maoz scooped the Golden Lion for best film with his controversial anti-war piece “Lebanon,” while Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat’s “Women Without Men” was rewarded with the Silver Lion for best direction.
