Iran leader warns opposition of "harsh response"

Iran’s Supreme Leader has issued a stern warning to the opposition, three months after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s contested election victory.

It was the first time since the presidential poll plunged the country into turmoil that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has led Friday Prayers in Tehran. And his sermon was a clear sign he won’t tolerate any threat to Iran’s clerical system of government. He said: “Confronting the system, confronting the principles of the system, standing up to and drawing a sword against the system, will get a harsh response.” With Iran’s nuclear programme set to dominate behind-the-scenes talks at the upcoming UN General Assembly, meanwhile, the US and EU say a package of proposals submitted by the Islamic Republic this week fails to address the issue.
