Akin cooks up kitchen comedy for Venice filmfest

Turkish-German director Fatih Akin has cooked up a comedy treat for the Venice Film Festival.

“Soul Kitchen” – about a restaurant in the suburbs of Hamburg – brought genuine belly laughs from the cinema aficionados who are more accustomed to hard-hitting art house dramas from the festival favourite. Moritz Bleibtreu plays the brother of restaurateur Zinos and compared being in the kitchen to being in front of camera, saying: “It’s like you see the dish and you can see the soul of the guy and it’s the same in acting and you see the way somebody approaches a character, you see the parts of what this person really is deep down.” In the running for a Golden Lion award, “Soul Kitchen” moves next to the Toronto Film Festival and will have its German premiere in Hamburg on September 24.
