Ethnic tensions have boiled over again in China’s Xinjiang region over a series of syringe stabbings.An estimated 3,000 Han Chinese demonstrators massed in Urumqi, the capital of the far western province to call for its top official to stand down. It is a sensitive time for China as it prepares for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on Oct. 1 with a nationwide security clampdown. The demonstration was a rare public challenge by Han Chinese to the ruling Communist Party in tense Xinjiang, where deadly ethnic strife with Muslim Uighurs broke out in early July.
