Emergency fire crews say they are winning the war against wildfires sweeping Greece.
An International fire fighting force has said it’s started to gain control of an inferno that has been threatening suburbs surrounding Athens for the last few days. Tens of thousands of people were forced to flee for their lives as the blaze spread close to the ancient capital, gutting dozens of houses and large areas of forest. Along with Athens, several coastal resorts and Aegean islands west of the mainland still remain badly affected. Dozens of aircraft, including planes and helicopters from various European countries helped to douse the flames. The government of Costas Karamanlis has come in for heavy criticism that Greek authorities were badly prepared. “Why aren’t they (the government) out there buying more fire engines and fire helicopters right now? So they can put out these fires that have just burned all of Greece, have just burned my country,’‘ said one woman. The Greek government has dismissed the charge, despite the country’s press and opposition parties attacking its handling of the fires.
