America’s first family is getting to ready for its first presidential vacation, which starts on Monday on the exclusive Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard. The resort was a favourite holiday haunt for former Democrat presidents Kennedy and Clinton, while Obama’s predecessor George W. Bush favoured his ranch in Texas.
Regulars in Martha’s Vineyard are thrilled about having the Obamas in town. Resident Debbie Carruthers said: “Everyone is excited. He’s bringing a resurgence to the industry here. There is lots of memorabilia that you can buy, and I think they’re very happy to be connected with this president, you know, even just to be on the island at the same time as him.” But the Obamas’ break may be disrupted by one not-so welcome guest called Bill. Hurricane Bill has been moving up the eastern US coastline after brushing past Bermuda on Saturday. Beaches in Martha’s Vineyard remain closed; while the storm is forecast to stay away from the mainland, it is expected to cause large waves and dangerous high and rip tides.
