Firefighters are trying to contain hundreds of wildfires that are threatening villages across mainland Greece.
One of the largest blazes erupted in the Grammatikos region on the northern outskirts of Athens. Ground teams worked throughout the night despite being hampered by gale-force winds. Airplanes and helicopters joined the effort at daybreak. Wildfires are an annual menace in Greece. In 2007 flames swept through the island of Evia in the southern Peloponnese, killing at least 65 people.
