Spotlight on ETA after huge arms find in France

Large amounts of hidden weapons and explosives believed to belong to ETA have been unearthed in southern France.

Since Wednesday, three separate arms caches have been discovered. Collectively, they are the biggest such find on French soil since 2002. What looks like the latest blow to the Basque separatist group follows the arrest this week of three of its suspected members in the French Alps. The trio were detained by anti-terror officers at a ski resort in the Savoie region. One of them – Alberto Machain Beraza – was on a list of wanted ETA suspects issued by Spain after a car bomb killed two Civil Guards on Majorca in July. Hand guns, ammunition, detonators, false papers and car number plates were also found in the resort.
