Further violence in Russia's unstable southern region

Gunmen have shot dead Ingushetia’s Construction Minister Ruslan Amerkhanov at point blank range. The local interior ministry said he died of his wounds at the scene.

This is the latest in a series of killings in the mainly Muslem region. After the shooting two unidentified gunmen reportedly fled the construction minister’s office in the heavily fortified regional capital of Magas. Corruption is rife throughout Russia’s Caucasus region. A festering Islamist insurgency has made Ingushetia the main area of violence on Russia’s southern rim. Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov is recovering after being seriously wounded in a suicide bomb attack on his motorcade six weeks ago. Some sources say the failed attack on Yevkurov was an attempt to halt his efforts to curb bribery.
