A Finnish cargo ship sailing under a Maltese flag with a Russian crew of between 13 and 15 has vanished off the coast of Portugal.
The disappearance of the bulk carrier Arctic Sea
is a mystery.
Usually ships are tracked automatically,
but it didn’t work in this case, according to an expert.
Incidents leading up to her disappearance suggest that the case of the Arctic Sea may be more than a simple tragedy.
The ship and its crew were hijacked off Sweden on July 24 then released to sail on to their destination in Algeria.
Four days later, the ship with a 1.3 million euro cargo of timber, lost radio contact with the shore.
She failed to arrive at her destination port Bejaia
in Algeria on August 4 and nothing has been heard of her since.
The Russian navy is now reportedly searching for the vessel.
