Confessions in German terror trial

Four suspected Islamist militants on trial in Germany have begun confessing their planned crimes in court. Police say Fritz Gelowicz, Daniel Schneider, Attila Selek and Adem Yilmaz have been revealing how they intended to attack US military bases in Germany. The hearing in Duesseldorf had been adjourned while investigators questioned the men.

Federal Public Prosecutor Volker Brinkmann said: “The defendants confirmed that they intended to kill as many US soldiers as possible here. During our investigation we had already found out that the defendants aimed to do that, and they have confirmed it in the course of pleading guilty.” The group had got hold of 12 barrels of hydrogen peroxide – enough to make more than half a tonne of explosives. They had no idea that 600 police officers had been watching them for nearly nine months. It is believed the gang are hoping for more lenient sentences in exhange for their confessions.
