Three children were among five people who died in a fire at a block of council flats near Paris. The fire brigade said the blaze probably broke out in the stairwell of the multi-storey building. Investigators are treating it as suspicious.
A spokesman said they do not yet know why it spread to the flat on the eighth floor where the bodies of four of the dead were discovered. The fifth victim was found in the stairwell. It happened in the town of Sevran in the north eastern suburbs of Paris, 16 kilometres from the centre of the French capital. 160 firefighters from 21 fire stations in the area were mobilised to tackle the flames. 29 people were injured – 15 of whom were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke. A fire-brigade spokesman said those on the upper floors would certainly have died had they not been rescued.
