German Health minister, Ulla Schmidt has been cleared of misusing public funds after she used her official car in Spain while on holiday.
In what has become known as the “limo affair”, Schmidt’s use of the Mercedes came to light when it was stolen in the Spanish resort of Alicante. Opposition politicians were outraged that she had ordered her car to be driven the 2,500 kilometres to Spain. But after an investigation the audit office has said they’ve found nothing irregular. According to their spokesperson, Schmidt paid for any of the journeys which were private and proved others were in line with party regulations. Social Democrat election candidate Frank-Walter Steinmeier immediately backed his colleague and declared her “back on the team”.
