WHO to provide progress report on H1N1 vaccine research

The World Health Organisation is set to provide an official progress update on the production of vaccines against the H1N1 flu virus as the global pandemic continues to spread.

Clinical trials have already begun on a vaccine in Australia, while of the big three pharmaceutical companies – Novartis has begun human testing, and Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline are expected to follow suit shortly. The number of recorded infections stands at over 160 000 but under-reporting means the true figure is likely to be in the millions, while the offcial death toll is 1154. South American countries are among the worst affected and they are concerned to make sure rich Western nations do not take all the stock for themselves when vaccines do become available.
