Workers at Russia’s biggest car-maker have called for it to be re-nationalised in the face of falling sales and wages. Hundreds gathered outside the AvtoVaz factory in Togliatti after management decided to cut workers’ hours and pay.
AvtoVaz makes the long-running Lada brand, and is co-owned by France’s Renault and a Russian state corporation. But after a decade of economic growth Russia is in recession and car sales have collapsed, and workers’ pay is to cut to half their pre-slump levels from next month. Union leaders denounced management as incompetent amid rumours of massive layoffs and production cuts. The lines at AvtoVaz have been shut down for the whole of August.
