Huge turnout for Manila funeral of Cory Aquino

Hundreds of thousands of mourners have turned out in Manila to say goodbye to former Philippines president Cory Aquino. It took the cortege some eight hours to inch its way past the crowds down the 20 kilometre route from Manila Cathedral to the memorial park where she was buried with full military honours.

Yellow ribbons were everywhere – yellow was the colour associated with the 1986 revolution which brought Aquino to power, ending the rule of Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino was buried alongside her husband Benigno, whose assassination in 1983 catapulted her onto the national, and international stage.
