Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been sworn in for a second term of office as Iranian president.
In his address to the parliament in Teheran, Ahmadinejad said Iran must continue to resist oppressive nations. He also told Western leaders who had not sent him messages of congratulations on his re-election that “no-one in Iran was waiting on them”. Some 100 reformists have been put on trial for acting against national security by fomenting post election unrest. Opposition leaders have denounced what they call a ‘show trial’ and called for a continuation of protests. The trial will continue on Thursday. Pictures posted on the internet two days ago, appear to show the appetite for protest has dwindled little. Ahmadinejad’s election in June unleashed the worst unrest in Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 with at least 20 deaths.
