The Philippines has declared 10 days of mourning following the death of former president Corazon Aquino.
Known as ‘Cory’ to millions of Filipinos, she died on Saturday aged 76 after long battle against colon cancer. Aquino became Asia’s first female president after toppling dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the 1986 people’s power revolution. The country’s current president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo paid her own tribute to the late leader. ‘‘Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril. Our nation will mourn her passing.’‘ Aquino is expected to lie in state in the capital Manila until Monday and will be buried beside her husband in a private ceremony later this week.
