Amsterdam, the gay city

Gay Dutch soldiers and police have marched in uniform, for the first time, along with other homosexuals as Amsterdam celebrates Gay Pride Week.

A record turnout of some 600,000 spectators have flocked to the Dutch city to enjoy a round-the-clock programme of photo exhibitions, movies and parties. That’s the backdrop to the spectacular canal parade featuring some 80 boats along Amsterdam’s narrow waterways. Boosting transatlantic relations, the city’s mayor Job Cohen is marrying five gay and lesbian couples. Each couple is composed of one American and one Dutch partner. The Dutch tourism board has come up with an unusual marketing slogan: “Everyone’s Gay in Amsterdam.”
