Baghdad mosques hit by wave of bomb blasts

Six bombs have struck Shi’ite mosques across Baghdad, killing at least 29 people and injuring more than 130.

The blasts appeared to target Shi’ite Muslims taking part in Friday prayers – and call in to question the ability of local forces to protect the population in the wake of the withdrawal of US forces from the front line. In the worst incident a car bomb struck people praying in the street outside a crowded mosque in northern Baghdad’s Shaab district. U.S. combat forces withdrew from Iraqi cities and towns last month, raising fears that untested local forces would be unable to fend off renewed violence.
