Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameni has ordered the closure of a detention centre for those held since last month’s disputed presidential election. The move’s seen as a goodwill gesture aimed at calming tensions following mass arrests of demonstrators protesting the outcome of last month’s Presidential election won by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
A spokesman for the Iranian Justice Ministry said it’s expected many of the detainees will be freed by the end of the week. All three opposition candidates claimed that the election result was rigged. Police and paramilitaries violently suppressed the protests. The Iranian government banned opposition rallies.
