Iran’s vice president has stepped down following pressure from hardliners. Yesterday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had demanded the head of Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie after comments the senior official made in 2008.
Mashaie had angered the Supreme leader after he said Iranians and Israelis were friends. Up until yesterday President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had refused to buckle over his appointment in a standoff with Khamenei. The latest political controversy follows weeks of unrest following Iran’s disputed presidential election.
