Two dead in fires on Sardinia

Authorities on the island of Sardinia say two people have been killed and one person is missing after a number of fires broke out on the western side of the island. Italian firefighters say the hot swirling southern winds and baking temperatures are not helping in their efforts to bring the blazes under control. Houses and farms are under threat.

Weather forecasts for Sardinia predict that the wind will die down on Friday, but temperatures look set to reach 46 degrees.
