In Corsica, operations have been going on to bring three large fires in the south of the island under control. In all, close to 4,000 hectares of scrub and forest have burnt since the start of the fires. Five firefighters have been injured and a dozen houses have been destroyed.

People spoke of beating out the flames in their homes to prevent their property from burning. The authorities say one of the fires was started deliberately and another caused by a power line short circuit. Several firefighting planes have been helping operations on the ground against the flames.More about: ,
