No fewer than six wildfires have brought destruction and death to Sardinia. A shepherd perished trying to protect his flock while a farmer died of a heart attack attempting to escape the flames.
Strong winds and temperatures of up to 46 degrees Celsius hampered firefighting efforts on the Italian island. Emergency crews have also been tackling a forest fire on the mainland, in Tuscany. Sardinia’s fires are now under control, say authorities. But dozens of people have suffered the effects of smoke, 200 bathers were trapped for hours on a beach by a blaze and a prison had to be evacuated as fire approached. Meanwhile, thousands of hectares of land have burned.
