Latvian capital hit by toxic chemical spill

A chemical spill in the capital of Latvia saw hundreds of people evacuated amid fears a highly toxic substance could explode. The chemical, known as acetone cyanohydrin, seeped from a cargo container in Riga’s port over night.

The substance, used in the manufacture of acrylics, is classified as extremely hazardous as it decomposes into potentially-fatal hydrogen cyanide. Those evacuated have now been allowed to return to their homes.
