The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, has denied the Colombian rebel group FARC gave funds to his 2006 election campaign. He says a video which purports show the group did -is a fabrication. Correa says the claims are propaganda and Colombia, along with right wing elements in South America, are trying to damage Ecuador and its government. Relations between Ecuador and Colombia have been rocky since March 2008 when Colombia forces killed 25 people in an anti-guerilla raid on the Ecuadorean side of the border. The video came from another cross border raid and was allegedly by Colombian police from a seized FARC lap top. It purportedly shows a FARC commander reading the death bed manifesto of leader Manuel Marulanda. The manifesto acknowledges FARC contributions to Correa’s campaign. Correa insists any contact his government had with FARC was strictly for humanitarian reasons related to the release of hostages.
