A major police operation around Naples and in northern Italy has netted 32 suspected members of the Camorra organised crime network.
Those arrested included Maria Capone and Angela Diana, the wife and daughter of suspected boss Raffaele Diana.
Some 20 people were arrested in Caserta near Naples, and 12 in Modena in the north. All are members of the Casalesi clan, considered the most powerful and bloody of the Camorra family cells.
Another 10 people already in prison were arrested on fresh charges, and two suspects remain at large.
Along with the arrests, property and assets worth more than an estimated 50 million euros were seized.
All are accused of extortion, illegal gambling and Mafia association. The Camorra is one of Italy’s largest criminal organisations and was exposed in the bestselling book “Gomorrah” by Roberto Saviano.
