The first exhibition of contemporary art to open in Chechnya for decades has gone on display in the capital Grozny. Paintings by a Russian winner of the prestigious Kandinsky Prize focus on the late Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov – who was killed in a bombing in 2004. The owner of the Triumph Gallery is convinced that art has the capability to promote peace after two bloody wars. It remains to be seen how a collection of pictures of a man who made so many enemies will go down with those who want a Chechnya independent of Russia.
