Bombers target Basque socialists

A bomb has exploded outside the Socialist Party headquarters in Spain’s Basque country.

No-one was injured but 40 local residents had to be evacuated amid fears the blast damaged a gas pipe. Several buildings were badly damaged by the explosion at around midnight local time in the town of Durango. No-one has claimed responsibility for planting the bomb but several Spanish media outlets are claiming it was the work of Basque armed separatists ETA. The apparent target was the office of the Basque Socialist Party, which won recent regional elections, ousting the Basque nationalists as the ruling party in the regional parliament.
