It is Day Two of the G8 summit in Italy, and major emerging countries have joined the leaders of the world’s richest industrialised nations for discussions on global warming and international trade.
US President Barack Obama is hosting climate discussions. But despite a dramatic change of attitude at the White House, hopes of agreeing ambitious carbon emissions cuts by 2050 are not high. Developing nations are not satisfied with G8 proposals so far and the early departure of the Chinese President means the Chinese delegation may be wary of committing itself. The other major topic will be trade and there is more optimism there. It looks likely leaders will finally conclude the stalled Doha trade talks that began in 2001.
