Exit polls: GERB wins Bulgarian election

The first exit polls following the elections in Bulgaria say the conservative GERB party is on course for victory, but not with an absolute majority. The first polls said Sofia mayor Boiko Borisov’s party set to win 41 per cent of the vote, giving them 117 seats in the 240 seat parliament.

Outgoing Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev’s Socialists are predicted to win just 39 seats, as voters appeared to punish them for botched economic reforms and for failing to tackle endemic corruption. The first official results are due later.
