Deadly explosion hits EU monitors in Georgia

world news

An explosion has hit a patrol of European Union monitors in Georgia, leaving one person dead and another wounded. Local authorities say the victims are a driver and a medic who were working along the de facto border with the breakway Abkhkazia region.

About 225 EU monitors were deployed last year to patrol the border regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This after Russia’s war with Georgia last year. Separatist authorities have denied the monitors access to either of the pro-Russian rebel regions.

Russia vetoed the extension of a UN observer mission in Georgia earlier this month.
