Iranian rulers agree to meet election candidates

Authorities have imposed severe reporting restrictions, making it difficult to get a clear and comprehensive idea of developments in Iran.

The country’s religious rulers say President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the election fairly, but have agreed to meet his three rival candidates to hear their complaints. A spokesman said the Guardian Council would give its ruling after the encounter on Saturday. But the government continues to move against its enemies. One leading opponent, Ebrahim Yazdi, was reportedly arrested while he was in hospital. Hundreds of others are said to have been detained in the past few days.
